Germany has pledged to donate $80 million to help preserve and restore the Auschwitz death camp museum. The donation to the Auschwitz-Birkenau Foundation comes jointly from the federal government and the states. The Federation was established last year to secure long-term financing for maintaining the site of the former camp. Many of the original structures were thought to be in a bad state. Guido Westerwelle, the German Foreign Minister, said his nation had a “historical responsibility to keep the remembrance of the Holocaust alive.” The US is contributing $15 million.
