For the second time in under three months, Britain’s second biggest selling daily newspaper The Daily Mail has shown itself to be ignorant of Jewish customs.
A story posted on the paper’s website dailymail.co.uk about Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich’s preparations for his upcoming New Years Eve party featured a picture of the oligarch kindling the candles of a public menorah on the Caribbean island of St Barts as is customary during the Jewish festival of Hannukah. Standing beside Abramovich in the picture is his girlfriend Dasha Zhukova and a local rabbi of the Chabad denomination. The Daily Mail’s caption reads “Joining in: Abramovich was mingling with the locals on the island and even stopped to light some large candles,” failing to mention anything about the festival of Hannukah.
The omission follows a similar slip up earlier this year when the paper published photos of Jewish celebrity couple Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump out and about in New York with their baby Arabella Rose. In the shots taken on the Jewish festival of Sukkot, Kushner is holding a traditional lulav – (palm branch.) The Daily Mail referred to the lulav, writing, “He also held some flowers in one hand – perhaps a gift for his wife.”
