WSJ – Mitt Romney’s newly assertive Florida campaign appeared to pay off this weekend as he bested rival Newt Gingrich in a local poll and put Mr. Gingrich on the defensive Sunday morning.
With the pivotal Florida Republican presidential primary approaching on Tuesday, the top two contenders dug into each other over the weekend during rallies and on the airwaves. A poll released late Saturday had the former Massachusetts governor 11 points ahead of Mr. Gingrich even before the former House speaker’s lackluster debate performance on Thursday in Jacksonville. More recent polls show Mr. Romney leading by even wider margins in Florida.
