Following their Friday afternoon prayers, Palestinians began to throw firebombs and rocks at members of the Israel Defense Forces, marking the beginning of a weekend that has Israeli citizens and the country’s security apparatus on alert.

Below is The Algemeiner’s blog from Friday, which followed the events in Israel live as they happened.

2:40pm: Crowds being to disperse inside Israel and at the country’s border with Gaza.  50 people were injured during the riots in the West Bank and Gaza.

“Overall, no dramatic incidents took place, and the security forces in the Palestinian cities did not allow the demonstrations to spread,” said IDF Spokesman Brigadier-General Yoav Mordechai.

Hezbollah’s leader, Hassan Nasrallah, took a different approach.

“This is a great day for Palestine and Jerusalem, when our Palestinian brethren came out to protest within occupied Palestine and outside it,” he said.

12:50pm: The violence coming from the Palestinian riots becomes deadly as a man trying to enter Israel illegally is shot dead by IDF forces.  At least 34 people have been arrested and dozens injured as Friday night sets upon Israel and the region.

10:00am: Palestinians from Gaza attempting to breach the border with Israel are injured as the IDF responded with fire to push them back.  Ynet in Israel reported that Hamas  forces were using clubs to beat rioters trying to get to the Israel-Gaza border.

9:30am: Palestinian Authority lawmaker Mustafa Barghouti was taken to the hospital after suffering an injury.  Differing reports were given, with the IDF saying Barghouti was injured in an internal fight between protestors over who would lead a march while another account said Barghouti was hit in the head with a tear gas canister.

8:30am: Violence in the West Bank and Jerusalem breaks out as Palestinians begin throwing molotov cocktails and rocks.

“They are throwing stones, and we are responding,” said Israel’s Public Security Minister Yitzhak Aharonovitch.

The response included tear gas and high frequency sound waves to disperse crowds.
