Independence day celebrations for residents of Ashkelon in southern Israel were cut short when a rocket exploded in the area, believed to have been fired from the Gaza Strip.

Ashkelon, which has been the target of rocket fire emanating from Gaza for years, has experienced three separate attacks in the last week.

The town’s audio alert system was sounded just after midnight on Thursday, as residents in the area alerted police after hearing an explosion.  No injuries have been reported following the incident.
