The inflammatory ad campaign that hit New York’s Westchester County earlier this month is now on the frontline of the Israeli-Palestinian Arab battle for American public opinion.

Henry Clifford, chairman of the Committee For Peace In Israel and Palestine, paid $25,000 to the Metro-North Railroad – an agency of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority – to run his ad for 30 days. The ad, “Palestinian Loss of Land – 1946 to 2010,” features four maps, all of which intend to “bolster claims that Israel has systematically confiscated land from the Palestinians.”

Now, StandWithUs (SWU) – a non-profit organization dedicated to informing the public about Israel and combating anti-Semitism – has launched a campaign of its own to highlight “the real Israel – its vibrancy, creativity, and humanitarianism – and underscore that Israel is on the forefront, working alongside the U.S., of making the world a better place.”

But is this really an effective way to counter Henry Clifford’s false claims?

While SWU’s ads portray the State of Israel for what it truly is – a homeland for the Jewish people, a pioneer in technology, a light unto the nations – they do not challenge Clifford’s distorted portrayal of Israel as a land thief. The ads do not feature similar maps showing the real evolution of the land – which would depict Israel, not Palestine, diminishing in size – nor do they shed light on the fact that 4.7 million – the number of Palestinians the U.N. classifies as refugees, and a detail Clifford highlights in his ad – is a grossly exaggerated figure.

In spite of their good intentions, SWU’s decision to address Israel’s positive attributes instead of countering Clifford’s false claims negatively affects public perceptions of the Jewish State. To stand by without defending Israel against the hateful, false allegations of land theft makes it seem as if the American pro-Israel movement is not disagreeing with Clifford’s distortion of history, but instead, trying to showcase Israel’s positive contributions to the world as a way of diverting attention away from the matter.

One SWU ad makes this very point. The ad shows that “Israel saves water through cutting-edge water conservation technology that is being exported around the world.” While it is important to educate the public on this gift of drip irrigation, in addition to Israel’s many other contributions, such information is irrelevant when attempting to combat Clifford’s distorted message. Without first disproving the content of the ad and asserting Israel’s right to exist today, this achievement makes it seem as if Israel is conserving water that it stole from the Palestinian Arabs.

Of course, this is not the case. SWU is right to highlight all the good that Israel does for the world, but such efforts alone are not enough. The best way – no, the only way, to truly combat Clifford’s virulently anti-Israel message is to publicly – via ad, pamphlet, or flyer – prove it wrong. Because history and truth is on our side, nothing should stand in our way.

Clifford welcomes the challenge: “Anyone who challenges these maps and the content of these ads, it’s their obligation to show that they’re historically wrong. The ball is in their court.”

The time has come to fight back for American public opinion. Here’s what people can do:

  • Print out numerous copies of StandWithUs’s historically accurate map of the evolution of the Middle East. Consider labeling it, “What Henry Clifford’s Map Didn’t Tell You…”
  • Distribute copies of this map to commuters at your local Metro-North station, particularly during peak hours so you reach the most commuters.
  • Speak with eager individuals at the station about Israel’s land concessions for peace, and how Israel – not Palestine – is shrinking.
  • Mention that Israel gave up control of the Sinai, Gaza, Southern Lebanon, as well as much of the West Bank over the years, all in pursuit of peace.
  • Bring along relevant literature on the subject.

The 48 war was the was the result of the Palestinians together with their Arab allies to perform ethnic cleansing on the Jews and their failure to complete it.
Every single Jew in the parts of the Mandate seized by the Arabs was expelled from their homes. No exceptions. They even dynamited the entire ancient Jewish quarter of the Old City of Jerusalem in an attempt to wipe out the history of Jewish residence there. They also made it illegal for a Jew to live in the areas of the former Mandate that they controlled, including East Jerusalem, West Bank, Gaza and Jordan.
850,000 Jews were also forced from the Arab countries.
After the 5 Arab armies attacked Israel in 48,
    Haj Amin Al Husseini stated:
I declare a holy war, my muslim brothers! Murder the Jews! Murder them all!
The Arab League Secretary, General Azzam Pasha declared “a holy war. He said, “This will be a war of extermination and a momentous massacre which will be spoken of like the Mongolian massacres and the Crusades.
The Arabs are invaders from Saudi Arabia.
How do the Arabs have 22 countries when all the Arabs come from 1 country Saudi Arabia?
How did the Arabs get all of North Africa from the Berbers? (Algeria, Tunisa, Morocco, Libya)
Look at the blacks in Sudan, Mauritania and Somalia.
How the heck did those people become Arab?

Its called Mohammad and his Jihad armies in the 7th century invaded and took the entire Mideast and North Africa and forced everyone they defeated to be Islamic and Arab.
The fact of the matter is, their was never in history any state called Palestine governed by Palestinians in history.
Israel offered the Palestinians a state, even though there was never in history any state called Palestine governed by Palestinians.
I have 2 words for you. Palestinian Rejectionism.
The Palestinians refused to end the conflict as long as it meant that they would have to accept the legitimacy of Israel as a sovereign, permanent country and neighbor. Only when the Palestinians extremist/rejectionist/supremacist attitude changes will peace really be possible.
Why dont Clifford go on Palmediawatch see how the Palestinians glorify terrorists who massacre Israeli civilians, names streets after these terrorists and talk how Israel will be eliminated.
I guess talking about that dont fit his lies.

Find me one Palestinian leader who talks about 2 states for 2 people? You cant do it.
The Arabs have 80% of the Mandate borders and Israel has 20%.
The East Bank was part of the Mandate borders of 1917 and the Brits gave the Entire East Bank to the Arabs and named the country after the Jordan River.
(Jordan) Jordan is 75% of the land.
Israel has 20% of the land, the Arabs 80%.
Jordan also passed a law stating their country must be Jew free, pretty much like all the Arab countries.
Oh but wait, there are 10 Jews in Yemen.

Even though their was never in history any state called Palestine, 6 times the Jews offered the Arabs a state.
The Jews offered Arabs a two-state solution in 1919; accepted the two-state solution of the Peel Commission in 1937; accepted the UN two-state solution in 47-48. Israel offered the Palestinians a state in 2000; accepted the Clinton Parameters in 2000-01; and offered a state again at the end of 2008. The Palestinians rejected every offer, becoming the first people in history to reject a state 6 times and then set conditions for discussing another one.
The Palestinians want a state free of Jews, then to flood Israel with millions of Arabs for the 2nd state.
The Pals reject a Jewish majority Israel.
That is the conflict right there. Its called Arab fascism.

The Arabs continually initiate the violence. The Israelis have not fired the first shots.
Do the Palestinians expect not to be fired back on? Its ok for them to blow up school kids on buses, shopping malls, disco’s, pizzeria’s and Passover seders.
Someone please explain to me how the Israelis could possibly live next to such a violent people. I personally don’t see how it can be done at this point. All I see is the Palestinians provoking war and using any method they can to get all of Israel.
It seems that after 5 decades of terror and murder against Israel.
The Palestinians might have realized that this campaign of terrorism and rejectionism has failed.

What Standwithus should do is, post pics of Palestinian terrorists using civilians as human shields and firing into Israel.
    Look at this video.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GWQQFJXMrg4&feature=related

Look at the 3 pics from 4:40 to 4:47
Also look at the pic at 8:39.
If that isn’t Palestinian child abuse, then nothing is.
Also look at the pic at 8:23 of a Palestinian gunman dragging a Palestinian child as a human shield.
Then post Golda Meir’s famous words about Palestinian child abuse.
When the Palestinians love their children more then they hate Jews, then their will be peace.

  • Clifford quotes show very clearly that he has no ability to think for himself, and that his entire knowledge of the Middle East comes from anti-Israel websites that he simply copies and pastes from without doing even the slightest fact checking.

Come on guys, isn’t about time our people are becoming the “bad guys” in that area?

We have this complex going and no wonder our homeland is illegal. How about the natuve Manhattan Indians retake the island.

Keep this up and we’ll truly have the gentiles hate us.

  • StandWithUs response:

We appreciate Ms. Newman’s call to counter the kind of misinformation about Israel that appears, for example, in Mr. Clifford’s ad, and her recommendation that readers use StandWithUs materials to do so. We designed six different messages to counter Clifford’s billboard without really engaging his allegations. Two of our messages directly refute Clifford’s claims about Jewish “theft” of Palestinian land by underscoring the Jews’ 3,000 year presence in their homeland and by using images of the Arch of Titus and The Bible to confirm this. A third shows how Israel has repeatedly offered to give up land for peace, and how many times Palestinians have rejected these offers. We hope its clear that we wanted to do more than just refute Mr. Clifford’s allegations. We understand, based on our own research, that most of the millions of viewers of our ads will likely not have seen Clifford’s ads when they are looking at ours. The StandWithUs posters needed to be able to stand alone, and they do. You can see the ads at sayyesttopeace.org

    Whistling in the darkness.

Clifford is right…through thick and thin, up and down, Israel has chopped down olive trees, driven Palestinians from their land and steadily abandoned all ethics and morality in its tribal warfare against its neighbors.

The only mitigating factor has been the poor performance of the various Palestinian leaders, and the primitive hatred from the Arab world.

Now Israel has its own George Bush in Mr Netanyahu, and no-one can expect rational behavior in the future.

I grew up with Israel. At age 12, I fervently loved and respected that nation of refugees.

That’s all over now. Like a hero who turns out to be a hateful bigot, Israel no longer merits respect or admiration. It exists only to steal and oppress.

Israel’s right to exist ? Exactly equivalent to the rights of Palestinians.
