Oliver Stone’s controversial new television series on Showtime, which debuted Nov. 12, argues that Henry Wallace, the leftwing former vice president, could have established peace with the Soviet Union and prevented the Cold War.

What is not widely remembered about Wallace is that he was a passionate supporter of Israel who turned the Truman administration’s Mideast arms embargo into a major campaign issue in the 1948 presidential race—and nearly defeated President Truman in the process.

Wallace first became interested in Zionism in the 1930s, when he served as secretary of agriculture under President Franklin Roosevelt. In 1938, he sent one of his deputies, Walter C. Lowdermilk, to examine soil conditions in a number of countries, including British Mandatory Palestine. He reported that with innovative farming methods, the Holy Land could absorb an additional four million European Jewish refugees. That was a sharp rebuff to British and Arab claims that the country was overcrowded.

“I don’t think [Lowdermilk] has any Jewish blood,” Wallace later recalled, “but he was the most complete Zionist convert anyone could ask for.” And as a result of Lowdermilk’s influence, Wallace too came to see the Jewish pioneers as American-style frontiersmen with a dash of biblical romance.

Wallace served as FDR’s vice president from 1940 to 1944, but Roosevelt grew wary of Wallace’s leftwing tilt and replaced him with Senator Harry S. Truman, who then became president in 1945. Wallace didn’t last long in Truman’s cabinet. Annoyed by Wallace’s pressure for a more conciliatory U.S. position toward the Soviet Union, Truman ousted him in 1946.

Wallace then became editor of The New Republic. In its pages he strongly defended the Zionist cause, at one point going so far as to suggest that the Jewish underground’s guerrilla war against the British was “in some respects like the fight the American colonies carried on in 1776…”

In October 1947, Wallace spent 10 days in the Holy Land, surveying Jewish settlements and industries and meeting with leaders such as Jewish Agency chairman David Ben-Gurion. Wallace’s glowing prediction that the Zionists would turn the Negev desert into “a veritable garden” received widespread attention. He also met with Irgun Zvai Leumi underground chief Menachem Begin.

At the end of 1947, Wallace announced his intention to run as a third-party candidate in the 1948 presidential election, as the nominee of the Progressive Party. He decided to make a concerted pitch for Jewish votes New York. In those days, New York State had the largest number of electoral votes—47—and the Jewish vote was likely to be crucial there.

A staple of Wallace campaign literature was a booklet, Meet Henry Wallace, authored by James Waterman Wise, the son of veteran American Jewish leader Rabbi Stephen S. Wise. It included a half-page photo of Wallace, pitchfork in hand, “helping the Jewish settlers in Galilee harvest their fields.”

But it was Truman’s arms embargo on the new State of Israel that became the focus of Wallace’s appeal to Jewish voters. At one rally, he accused Truman of “playing politics with the lives of the people of Israel.” At another, he charged that “Jewish blood lies on the hands of Mr. Truman tonight.”

It was no coincidence that the Soviet Union was taking a pro-Zionist line, however briefly. The Soviets were even supplying Israel with some weapons, via Czechoslovakia. It was a rare moment when the American left could support Zionism without inviting the wrath of Moscow.

By the autumn of 1948, New York’s newspapers were filled with talk of Jewish voters dumping President Truman and supporting Wallace. The New York Times reported that “New York Democrats” hoped Truman would announce a loan to Israel, in order to “win back into the Democratic column many voters who were estranged by the State Department’s coolness to [Israel].”

The New York Star called Truman’s last-minute pre-election statements praising Israel “a direct bid for a sizeable bloc of lukewarm New York City Democrats and independents. Many of the[m]…may even vote for Henry Wallace because of their dissatisfaction with Truman’s record, particularly on Palestine.”

In the end, Truman lost New York to Republican nominee Thomas Dewey by just 60,959 votes, less than 1 percent—and, as a result, Truman came very close to losing the national race. In his memoirs, Truman blamed Wallace—and he was right. Wallace won 8.25 percent, a remarkably high figure for a third party candidate.

Where did many of Wallace’s 509,559 votes come from? In the Brooklyn neighborhood of Brownsville—the most heavily Jewish neighborhood in the country—Wallace received 28 percent of the vote. Likewise in Coney Island, Boro Park, and other heavily Jewish areas, he won from 21 percent to 27 percent.  In Jewish sections of the Bronx, such as the Grand Concourse and Mosholu Parkway, Wallace won 20-24 percent. In Jewish neighborhoods of Manhattan, the results were similar: 28 percent for Wallace on the Lower East Side, 23 percent on the Upper West Side.

Overall, Truman received only 50-55 percent of Jewish votes in New York, with Wallace winning about 25 percent and Dewey around 20 percent. That’s the lowest share of the New York Jewish vote for any Democratic candidate in modern presidential election history, except Jimmy Carter.

Most Wallace voters were former Roosevelt supporters who would have voted for Truman if Wallace had not been in the race. They were furious that as Israel was fighting for its very existence, Truman refused to give it weapons. As longtime Democrats, most could not bring themselves to vote for the Republican nominee, Dewey—but by taking so many traditional Democratic votes away from Truman, they, in effect, gave the state to Dewey. Henry Wallace had pulled off one of the most successful exercises in third party-spoiler politics in American history.

How much of this will be included in the new 10-part TV series, “Oliver Stone’s Untold History of the United States,” remains to be seen. Stone’s views on Jewish subjects have sparked controversy in the past. He told the London Sunday Times in 2010 that “Hitler did far more damage to the Russians than [to] the Jewish people, 25 or 30 [million killed].” He blamed “the Jewish domination of the media” for supposedly hiding that information. He also charged that “Israel has [expletive] up United States foreign policy for years.”

After a public outcry, Stone expressed “regret” that he “made a clumsy association about the Holocaust” and acknowledged that “Jews obviously do not control media or any other industry.” He did not, however, withdraw his slur about Israel—a statement which, ironically, would have appalled the hero of his new TV series, Henry Wallace.

  • Bella Dodd knew Wallace … from Bella Dodd’s book about the Communist Party, School for Darkness (1954): “When the Progressive Party was finally launched, it represented not the farmers and workers of America but the same kind of synthetic coalition which had become a pattern of Communist participation in national politics. There were large numbers of disillusioned middle-class professionals in it; there were women of wealth, moved by humanitarian motives; and there were Communists and fellow travelers. All these elements were welded together by flashy professional publicity agents, glib of tongue and facile of pen. The cynical attitude of the top Communists toward the Progressive Party can best be illustrated by its results. Early in January of 1948 and before Henry Wallace had made any public statement, (in fact even before the Progressive Party had been formally organized), Foster announced through the Associated Press that it was going to be formed and that Henry Wallace would be its standard bearer. Before election day, it was clear that the Communists had perpetrated a fraud on those who were looking for a clear-cut party. For the Progressive Party—advertised as a farmer-labor party —was without the support of organized labor or of any basic farm organization. Aside from a few left-wing unions, labor support for it was synthetic. On election eve, I listened to Henry Wallace as he wound up his campaign on 116th Street and Lexington Avenue, in Marcantonio’s district. He was only a second-string speaker to the congressman, and he seemed out of place there, far away from the cornfields of Iowa. He was the candidate of a farmer-labor party, and yet he was actually supported by neither: As a voice of protest he was so completely controlled by the Communists that Americans were repelled and the election results showed that he had received only a few more than 900,000 votes, of which the 600,000 were in New York State. He did not affect the national picture, though he did make a difference in New York State where he insured the victory for Thomas E. Dewey. He received fewer votes proportionately than did Eugene Debs when he ran on the Socialist ticket.”

  • Truman, the president who kept the arms embargo in effect, was also the first world leader to recognize Israel–on the day it became independent. He also helped get the UN to vote in favor of Israel’s creation. The world is filled with contradictions.
My parents said they would vote for Wallace. When my mother came out of the voting booth, she said she had changed her mind while in the booth. She voted for Truman in order to help prevent Dewey from becoming president.
What were Dewey’s views on Israel? I have no idea.

My free download at http://www.lulu.com/spotlight/occupythewhitehouse agrees with Stone in highlighting Henry Wallace as a post WWII departure from the already viral U.S. military-industrial complex, which Eisenhower would warn us about a dozen years later. In a unit called “Terrorism’s Claim on America”, I, like Stone also recall the violence and oppression of U.S. policy. I advise that the U.S. may be attacked with portable nuclear devices by victims of its policies, and that plans for this may already be in the works.

  • —Oliver Stone BALKS a goldsen oppurtunity
    once again!

He begins his ‘untold history’ about half
a century too late —like the rest of Hollywood,
with the WWII. He give NO serious background on
the jeckyl Island banking coup of 1913 —little
on the Wall Street and London finance installation
of Lenin and later ‘M’powerment of STALIN.
he gives NO background on the sourcing of Marxism
and Darwinism and EUGENICS from the same capstone.
In fact, he doesn’t treat the over-arching theme
of capstone EUGENICS and the ‘PSY–ANT–’IF’ –ICK’
dick-tator-ship at all. Finally, he even seeds a
    little ‘die–all–eck–tick’ himself with his
appeal to ‘REAL-politicj’ viz a viz Roosevelt and Stalin
—in the face of the handover of our ENTIRE economy
to EUGENICS ‘very friendly’ –Rockefeller RED China.
