Don’t be fooled by Hamas’s ongoing celebrations in the aftermath of its conflict with Israel in Gaza, according to one senior Israeli military officer.

Hamas and other Palestinian terrorists are ‘thoroughly daunted’ following Israel’s Operation Pillar of Defense offensive, the anonymous officer told Reuters.

“Their jubilation was not from victory, it was from their relief at being able to emerge from shelters,” the officer said of Hamas.

The officer’s assessment comes despite Palestinian “victory” celebrations in Gaza and the West Bank, where Hamas held its first rally since 2007 on Dec. 13, drawing 5,000 supporters in Nablus. Demonstrators chanted “Hamas—you are the guns; we are the bullets,” and, “Hamas, fire more rockets on Tel Aviv,” the Associated Press reported.

Additionally, exiled Hamas chief Khaled Mashaal, upon visiting Gaza for Hamas’s 25th anniversary, said, “We are not giving up any inch of Palestine. It will remain Islamic and Arab for us and nobody else. Jihad and armed resistance is the only way.”

The article is misleading. In every war that Israel has fought against its Arab enemies the enemy has been thoroughly “daunted.” But this misses the point: the enemy has been able, tbanks to Israel’s unwillingness to complete reasonable military objectives, to declare victory. This, in turn, encourages and inspires actual and potential “jihadis” the world over to emulate Hamas in the hope that they too will enjoy similar successes. It may take some time but Hamas will rearm with more sophisticated weaponry and, in the future, continue its acts of terror against the Jews of Israel. A State that refuses to destroy criminals who present a present and future danger to its welfare is negligent and should be replaced.

Israel faces a number of constraints that other countries don’t. They rely on weapons from other countries and have to take into consideration their opinions. When Hillary Clinton arrives to intervene on behalf of the Gazans the Israelis cannot simply continue to fire away.
