U.S. President Barack Obama’s step-grandmother underwent emergency eye surgery in an Israeli-run hospital in Equatorial Guinea last week, the Times of Israel has reported.
Onyango Obama, who was the third wife of Obama’s paternal grandfather, lives in Kenya and was suffering from an undisclosed eye ailment. She was escorted to the hospital by Guinean Health Minister Tomas Mecheba Fernandez.
Israeli daily Yediot Ahronot reported that the procedure was successful and Obama is making a full recovery.
“All of Africa is talking about your hospital and of the fact that you don’t need to fly to Europe to get medical treatment,” Obama was quoted as saying following her operation.
According to the Times of Israel “The Shalom Hospital, located in the Guinean capital city of Malabo, was founded by Israeli entrepreneurs Yardena Ovadya and Ariyeh Horesh and is serviced by over 100 Israeli doctors, nurses and staff. The hospital provides medical treatment for underprivileged residents of Equatorial Guinea and other neighboring African countries.”
