Palestinian Arabs threw firebombs and stones, and in one instance mounted an IDF jeep, during a violent clash with Israeli forces on Thursday near Jenin in the West Bank. The incident came after a failed raid on a house in the area suspected of harboring terrorists.
The Israeli military says some 500 Palestinians took part in the attack. Palestinian officials say a Palestinian was shot in the hand by army fire and a woman was bitten by an army dog. The IDF soldiers were able to use dispersal means to dissolve the crowds.
The scene was similar to one that took place on Tuesday in which an undercover army unit was attacked by another large mob in the area. Rocks and firebombs were also used to attack the soldiers and military means of dispersal were used in this instance as well to dissolve the crowds of attackers.
Earlier Thursday the AFP published comments from a senior security official who claimed that due to increased terror activity in the West Bank and the fear of a third intifada, the IDF has increased arrests in the territory.
“There is a certain (Palestinian) awakening,” one source told AFP.
“As a consequence a decision was taken within the security establishment to increase intelligence activity and arrests among members of Hamas or operatives against Israel,” he added. “It started in the past few days and will increase.”
Adnan Damari, a spokesman for the Palestinian security forces , accused Israel of undermining their role in the territory. “We’re seeing an extension of their security operations in the West Bank. Israeli security forces are heading into more and more villages, making arrests and mainly disrupting our work, and eroding the status of the Palestinian security forces. All these actions remove the possibility of peace and security in the future. ”
