The big musical act of 2013 might just be a triumvirate of Jewish sisters from Los Angeles. Haim topped the BBC’s annual “Sound of” poll this week, were included on MTV’s “Brand New for 2013” survey, and are on the cover of music magazine NME’s new music edition out this week as well.

The band is made up of  Este, Alana and Danielle, all in their early- to mid-20s. Matt Wilkinson, an editor at NME, says the band is among the “two most exciting new bands to come into NME’s world since I started working here in 2008. Not only do they have the tunes, they have the attitude, looks and hunger to be big, and the savvy to make it happen without turning into wankers along the way. They’re the ones to watch, for me.”

The sister’s, whose father Mordechai is Israeli, aren’t immune to the internecine strife to which all family units are prone, though their differences are usually overcome through music, with bandmember Danielle telling Interview magazine, “It’s kind of weird how close we are I think, people get weirded out by it. We do bicker-when you’re sisters, you always bicker-but it’s usually a quick thing, we get over it really fast.”
