Weekly Standard – South Carolina senator Lindsey Graham has just sent a letter to Barack Obama’s defense secretary nominee, Chuck Hagel. Graham asks if, at a 2010 appearance at Rutgers University, Hagel said Israel “was risking becoming an apartheid state.”

A law student in attendance, Kenneth Wagner, wrote a contemporaneous email detailing Hagel’s remarks, saying the former Nebraska senator had said the state of Israel risked becoming an “apartheid state.” These allegations were first reported Tuesday by the Washington Free Beacon.

    If Chuck Hagel made such an allegation that Israel may become an apartheid state, he would join the ranks of James Earl Carter, Jr., the 39th President of the United States! What an honor to be in President Carter’s following! After all, it is not everyone who would wish to be in the company of the man who wrote Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid!, a NOVEL, that is to say, a fictitious account of the presence which is Israel in the Middle East! Imagination in such great thinkers may run deep. . . very deep. . . very deep.
