Iran Announces Plans to Build 16 New Nuclear Power Plants, Discovery of Uranium Deposits

Haaretz – Iran said it has found significant new deposits of raw uranium to feed its nuclear program and has identified sites for 16 more nuclear power stations, just days before talks with Western powers over its disputed atomic program.
The Iran Atomic Energy Organization report cited by state news agency IRNA on Saturday said the deposits were found in “southern coastal areas” and had trebled the amount outlined in previous estimates.

When I was geography undergrad,before most of the nations now in the world were born (we are making plans for my wifes 80th high school class reunion-she is the last leaf on the tree)-my interests were economic,social and strategic geography…that physical stuff were nusiance ‘must’ courses.
But I did learn that many minerals were widespread in occurance–today over 30 nations produce Uranium.Most mines take from 5-1 years to put on line and the production and concentration of that ore takes additional time.
This would be at a time when Iran’s economic mainstay the carbon fuels it produces will have competition from the worlds increasing production of these fuels from many old-and new sources …as well as alternative energy sources.
Iran’s burgeoning population would have increased from 80 million today to near 100 million
Its oil production 4 1/4 million barrels a day(55% exported) would last 100 years against its vast reserves.
So with vast reserves of a commodity that could easily become worth less and less -Why invest in technology that could become rapidly obsolete and at the same time pose dangers ?
A nuclear plant now could make some economic sense-but 16?
Nuclear plant sare used to decrease dependence on other fuels-which Iran has in abundance- and may not be able to export-embargo or no embargo in the future.
