The Anti-Defamation League today released a statement criticizing a sketch from Sunday night’s Academy Awards ceremony in which host Seth MacFarlane’s character “Ted,” an animated bear, tells actor Mark Wahlberg that if “you want to work in this town” you have to be Jewish.

Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director, issued the following statement:

While we have come to expect inappropriate “Jews control Hollywood” jokes from Seth MacFarlane, what he did at the Oscars was offensive and not remotely funny.  It only reinforces stereotypes which legitimize anti-Semitism.  It is sad and disheartening that the Oscars awards show sought to use anti-Jewish stereotypes for laughs.

For the insiders at the Oscars this kind of joke is obviously not taken seriously.  But when one considers the global audience of the Oscars of upwards of two billion people, including many who know little or nothing about Hollywood or the falsity of such Jewish stereotypes, there’s a much higher potential for the ‘Jews control Hollywood’ myth to be accepted as fact.

We wish that Mr. MacFarlane and the Academy Awards producers had shown greater sensitivity and decided against airing a sketch that so reinforces the age-old canard about Jewish control of the film industry.”

The skit caught the attention of at least one high profile Jewish media personality: Journalist Jeffrey Goldberg tweeted “Oh, great, an anti-Semitic talking bear,” immediately after the sketch aired.

Just because the Oscar statue is made in Chicago by a Jewish Co. We do not control Hollywood.
    Juast a small part

  • `Bob J

    Mobetter quote:
“If you want to work in this town, it helps to be a self hating Jew.”

  • RuthClaire Weintraub

How odd that the bear did not say something pertinent, like: “If you want to work here, you have to be as talented as the Jewish performers are.”

    • jack

saying that he should have mentioned the amazing skill of Jewish performers is…….
Funny you think you understand racism. Then you engage in racial exceptionalism.

Next you’ll say they are just “harder working”, more “education orientated” which ‘of course’ is not racial oneupmanship at all.

  • Jerry G

A more appropriate remark would have been, “If you want to work in this town you have to be Queer”.

  • Kiadani

Having been a minority Jew among Muslims all my life, I actually wouldn’t consider Ted’s comment as anti-Semitic from a global point of view. Hollywood is loved globally. Even if Jew actually did control Hollywood, then so what?! it’s just another pride for the tribe!

  • Mihai-Robert Soran-Schwartz

    The Times of Israel said:
“We Jews are a funny breed. We love to brag about every Jewish actor. Sometimes we even pretend an actor is Jewish just because we like him enough that we think he deserves to be on our team. We brag about Jewish authors, Jewish politicians, Jewish directors. Every time someone mentions any movie or book or piece of art, we inevitably say something like, “Did you know that he was Jewish?” That’s just how we roll.

But the funny part is when any person starts to spout stuff like, “The Jews control the media!” and “The Jews control Washington!”

Suddenly we’re up in arms. We create huge campaigns to take these people down. We do what we can to put them out of work. We publish articles. We’ve created entire organizations that exist just to tell everyone that the Jews don’t control nothin’. No, we don’t control the media, we don’t have any more sway in DC than anyone else. No, no, no, we swear: We’re just like everybody else!

Does anyone else (who’s not a bigot) see the irony of this?

Let’s be honest with ourselves, here, fellow Jews. We do control the media. We’ve got so many dudes up in the executive offices in all the big movie production companies it’s almost obscene. Just about every movie or TV show, whether it be “Tropic Thunder” or “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” is rife with actors, directors, and writers who are Jewish. Did you know that all eight major film studios are run by Jews?”

The real author is not the assumed “Manny Friedman” but Elad Nehorai of NYC. Initially the article appeared under his name…

  • Mihai-Robert Soran

People always laugh only if they KNOW that the background of the anecdote or joke is true, correct or at least totally plausible.
Let me put it in an open manner here: Most of us, who are Jews, also believe – of course not in public – that Hollywood is at least under heavy, major Jewish influence in all its vital components and elements.

  • noel hershfield

The ADL does not get it! Jews, despite 3 millenia of persecution, pogroms and holocausts , have survived and excelled in every aspect of civilization from the arts ,and science to philosophy etc -we should be proud of it ! Go Jews!Anti Antisemitism is pure jealousy and they are pissed off because we continue to live and contribute-despite their efforts to eradicate us!F them all!

    • jack

LOL And you are at it as well. The Exceptionaism that you promote in your comment is racism.
You cannot say that the jewish people excel in so much and then bitch about racism.
      It is a racist comment

    • Sabra C

Noel, you speak the Truth! With each attempt made to take ya’ll down, ALMIGHTY GOD takes ya’ll higher than ever before. EXCELLENCE, BRILLIANCE, WARRIORS! I proudly stand with you!

  • Michael Shafron

I loved the humor in what Ted said, but I did cringe as the skit unfolded. I believe it’s true that many of the powerful people in the industry are Jews, but it’s another thing to shout it out to all the uneducated people watching the show as a confirmation of their fears.

    • Mihai-Robert Soran-Schwartz

Oh, great sense of democracy: Only the elites should be exposed to reality one doesn’t like 🙂
And yes, on a weighted influence/power scale people of Jewish origin or faith outscore all other ethnic or religious groups – both on a group scale and an individual average score.

  • John Galt, Jr

    Palestina est fictionale

  • Heshy G

I was highly offended by the Ted routine. It only goes to fortify the myth that Jews control Hollywood and all the media. Such “humor” only adds fuel to the fire already burning in overt or covert anti-semites that exist in the US and all around the world. The Oscars, or anywhere for that matter, is no place for such tongue-in-cheek, back-stabbing of the Jewish people. I believe that the Academy, and Seth McFarlane himself, should come out with an apology. Let them admit that the skit was in very bad taste and highly offensive!

  • J.Beerman

MLK’s actual words were, “When people criticize Zionists, they mean Jews. You are talking anti-Semitism.”

People who don’t realize how dangerous and antisemitic Seth Macfarlane’s “jokes” are frighten me — a great deal. Any time people are belittled by sterotypes, it’s wrong and promotes hatred among ignorant people. Even Jewish Princess jokes are dangerous and unwise.

    • Mihai-Robert Soran-Schwartz

Then all Jewish jokes, made by us, Jews, are dangerous, unwanted, antisemitic and stereotypic…
Yes, our best jokes about both ourselves, but the others, too, are based on stereotypes that nevertheless reflect an experience stripped of individual details and enriched with generalizable OUTSTANDING characteristics.

And yes, I love them, defend them and don’t care at all about Jewish Princesses and their families.

And what MLK said made a lot of sense … for him and for some others. But criticism of Zionism as an ideology and political foundation is perfectly justified, and it isn’t antisemitic as long as the Diaspora Jews don’t jump up showing first Zionist loyalty and first then loyalty as citizens of their HOMELANDS …

  • EG Proulx

Oh please, ADL. If the keyword Jew shows up, you needn’t automatically leap in. Learn the meaning of “irony” and “parody.”

    • Rich

Just imagine some kind of “ironic” line like that was directed at the terribly misunderstood radical Muslim community that our beloved Obamas (how about that absurd tie-in at the end of the show–well, not so absurd given the fact that the Obamas owe a part of their re-election to Hollywood) apologize to. You are damn right Jews are sensitive to this stuff, but not enough as far as I see it. But we can take it right? After all, we’re not the victims here. And the world loves a good victim story. The whole “donate to Israel” thing? No, that’s not too anti-Semitic. Ted should have a little swastika made for him from Build A Bear.

      • Robert Geller

Why does it seem that it always alright to make fun of Jews while any humor slanted towards Muslims or African Americans is taboo. I was also amazed at how little was mentioned regarding the offensive nature of this skit the following day in the US media, especially since they spent so much time critiquing the host’s performance. Interesting note; If Jews control Hollywood and the media, why are there so much anti-semetic and anti-Zionist comments which seem to orginate in Hollywood?

        • EG Proulx

I think Muslims and African-Americans are fair game for humor, but they are a twitchy, insecure lot. With the first group, you run the risk of getting the Van Gogh treatment (blade in chest). For the second bunch, for now it takes a brutha to make fun of his people. Someone else do it, they racist.

        • jack

Funny, those comments you talk about are normally non Jewish people ( I hope you don’t use the term “gentile”)commenting on the power structure behind hollywood.
And if you think Hollywood is anti semetic then just look at the host of films about Muslim terrorists and the Muslim world.
NO film about the palestinian gaza kid getting allowed out of the prison camp to perform.
Why so many films to remind us of the horrors of ww2 and the nazis and None to tell us about todays apartite regimes?

Have you seen the film portraying the little plucky palestinian resistance fighter.
but we did have exodus. We do have film after film where Mossad are not murderous assasins but nice agents in support.
Long time ago and it had a lot of propaganda power.
Who knows who runs Hollywood ( but the credits tend to be telling)and don’t be so racist as to assume every jew supports Isreal.

The reason this keeps coming up is because there IS something to it.

      • Margie

Don’t you know only do we have to answer to a higher authority. Only are we too sensitive. B.S.

  • Sorry alqueda lover…Congressman john lewis..a close friend of Dr King…is on the record that Dr. King did say that. Cong Lewis is a lot more credible than you.

  • Honey West

Mariapalestina is obviously an anti-Semitic Palestinian advocate judging by her screen name and myth…am Yisrael Chai!

  • Reuven

It was a very inappropriate and anti-Semitic skit. The ADL is right top complain. Moreover, Dr. King did say that, “Ms. Mariapalestina.” He was a strong supporter of Israel.

  • It just shows you that hatred against races is still around.I myself a half bred Cherokee and Polish have been a victim myself. And it hurts!

  • We watched the Oscars but after “it’s cool to dump on Jews” jokes, no more.

  • Proud Jew

Jews, relax! What’s the big deal? Jews control Hollywood? That’s not a secret. Why do we need to deny it or be so sensitive about it? Stand up proud and tell the truth: We control the world. Yes, less than 0.5% of the world population, we do define the course of history, whether one likes it or not, or whether one admits it or not. Although unfortunately, Hollywood is not the part of the world that we should really be proud of controlling. Leave the “anti-Semites” alone, they are speaking the truth. It is us, the Jews, who at times do not want to face it and stand up to our responsibility to the world. Only Jews themselves can be real anti-Semites, no one can do us harm, but ourselves. Remember, we are in control!

    • dawvick

This is rubbish. Jews don’t ‘control’ anything. Invoking ugly stereotypes, as was stated in this thread, is a way to encourage brutal and unwonted reactions, many of which have resulted in pogroms and death of innocents. The history of the Jews is not a menu of fun reactions to notice by majoritarian societies. The really obnoxious thing was calling attention to the canard about ‘giving to Israel,’ which is not so much in evidence among the one stereotype that was NOT invoked in the endless spiel on Oscar night: Lefties who hate themselves, Jews, and anything not comporting with their puerile and underdeveloped sense of history and reality. Grow up, low-information bloggers and viewers.

There is a tremendous effort to deny that Martin Luther King ever said these words: “When people criticize Zionists, they mean Jews. You’re talking anti-Semitism.”

Unfortunately, he did. He said them at a dinner party in Cambridge (as quoted by Seymour Martin Lipset in Encounter magazine, December 1969, p. 24)

In fact, the complete quotation has a much sharper tone: To Mariapalestina,
Dr. King took a zero-tolerance approach to anti-Zionism:

One of the young men present happened to make some remark against the Zionists. Dr. King snapped at him and said, “Don’t talk like that! When people criticize Zionists, they mean Jews. You’re talking anti-Semitism!”

Martin Luther King’s quotations have been examined pitilessly by historians: his family in particular is careful to discredit words falsely attributed to him. One document in particular, “Letter to an anti-Zionist Friend,” is unquestionably a hoax. The quotation recorded by Lipset, however, is undisputed. To be precise, it is “undisputed” in the only sense that matters: we know that he in fact said it.

  • forreal

with such a name and the zionist myth comment, you dont really expect anyone to take your comment seriously do you?

  • Mariapalestina

Nothing antisemitic about it. Nobody in the sketch said Jews control Hollywood. It’s a fact, however, that while Jews represent about 2% of U.S. population they hold some 35% percent of jobs in the entertainment industry. That leaves about 65% of the jobs for 98% of the rest of the population. It’s a fact. I worked 40 years in the TV & film business in Hollywood, and eveybody here knows it’s the truth. What’s the big deal? They brag about it.

    • I’m not debating your numbers, but I’d like to know where you found these stats? As an Orthodox Jew, I was not offended by the remark, because I hear it all the time, and the ADL have bigger fish to fry than whether such a statement was said and how it might be interpreted. But I’d like to know if your stats are recorded, or are just estimates based on your years of knowledge?

    • Palestinadoesnotexista

Tell me, was it Arafat or Goebbels who did the empirical census research for you?

    • Mariapalestina,I don’t know if your statistic are correct, but in any case the Jews had used their bless capacity to be so influential not only in the entertainment industry. They had excelled in all they do, as had been follow more closely God teaching and are blessed by Him.
They are the one that had blessed humanity in medical, scientifically and in all aspect of our society.
      I’m very grateful to them.

      • jack

You really can’t see the racist exceptionalism in your post can you?

Man this country has a LOT to learn about racism.

    • Ed Clark

Everybody also knows that nearly 100% of the world’s terrorists are crazed islamist scumbags which leaves virtually no room in that “profession” for Jews, Christians or anybody else.

    • Alan

If we control the industry, how the hell did we let you work in it for 40 years? If we control it, we are doing a crappy job.

    • dawvick

But the Jewish representation in extreme basketball is close to nil; as is the participation in mining or space exploration (inside the rockets)–does that make a difference to the queen of a state that is mythical for being nonexistent yet having people spout off about their nonexistent “history,” of which there is none before they were wholly invented by an arch-terrorist and the father of hijacking and intifada murder. There are numerous industries in the world today, and the billions of people seeking work are at liberty to figure out where their strengths lie, and then become a part of the industry. It is no cause for hysteria that creatives often gravitate to loci that permit them to exercise their talents. That is true in every field, in every country except totalitarian states determining one’s life, such as China and the DPRK.

  • Kelley

Just my humble opinion, but he’s an equal opportunity offender. He also pokes fun at Christians — I know because I AM one. And alluding to the fact that there are a LOT of Jewish folks in Hollywood is not an ANTI-Jewish statement. I think the ADL is being a touch too sensitive this time. Sorry.

    • Palestinadoesnotexista

Notice that if Seth dared to replace “Jews” with “African Americans” or “Muslims” in his skit, there would be a gasp from the audience and a world wide uproar. For some reason, Jews and antisemitism are fair game.

      • Jeff

Well, if someone tried to make a joke about African-Americans controlling Hollywood, people might laugh because that is certainly not the case. None of those criticizing last night’s joke, which, as joke’s go, wasn’t very funny, evidently know much about Hollywood or its history and have probably never set foot there. .

It is a fact and bragged about in more knowledgeable Jewish circles, that Jews invented Hollywood and have run most of the major studios for years. It was when I was a child and my father worked in the industry and still is.

      • jack

Your name is a name obviously chosen by a racist.

You should be removed from this forum
Unless you want people to start saying that Israel does not exist.

The creation and legitimacy of Israel was on the CONDITION they allowed Palestine to continue to exist.
legally speaking you argue that Israel does not exist.
because it only legally exists along side the state of Palestine.

We have had ten years of Anti Muslim films. Where have you been?

We have had films making out all muslims to be terrorists for that whole time.
How do you make this comment while awake?

“Not sensitive enough” you say but I wonder what you thought about the Muslim hatred of films made to make offence at Allah?

        “we’re not the victims here”
We all are. didn’t you notice teh world around you?
We have conflict in the middle east made worse by years of anti Islamic propaganda and you have the nerve to pretend that it’s jewish people or white people or anyone but a muslim that has been offended and attacked by “hollywood”.

We have seen Hollywood attack Muslims

        You are a racist.

  • richard sherman

Hollywood is filled with antiSemetic jews like Gertrude Stein…They should stop writing antisemetic jokes and supporting antisemetic films…and instead remember the wisdom of Martin Luther King Jr who said in March 1968:…”if you are antiZionist then you are antisemetic”.

    • Mariapalestina

By the way, Martin Luther King never said that.
It’s just another zionist urban myth.

      • Tony

It would have been more relevant for Ted to thank the Muslim terrorists like Osama and the Iranian regime for providing material for two of the year’s top films. I’ll bet you’d be screaming islamophobia from the rooftops if those words were uttered.

      • Hey Maria,

Not only do Jews hold 35% of the jobs in the entertainment world, but hold 22% of the Nobel Prizes given, over 50% of US physicians are Jews and 5% of the worlds CPAs are Jewish. It’s ok, a certain “other” group has a monopoly on the number of terrorists in the world and they will continue to get stopped in our subways, in our airports and even in the American streets. I am certain that same group will also dominate American prisons… Despite the terrorist threats in Israel, have you ever checked out how happy Israelis remain? how good their quality of life is? Keep fighting your Intifada, seems like it is working out really well for you. 🙂

      • kevin

@Maria: with a last name like that, I wouldn’t expect you to actually be aware of history and truth.

      • Dorron Katzin

Mariapalestina, it is you who are mistaken about what Dr. King said. See

        Dear Mary the pali-lover,
Your head must be so far up your large intestine & your hatred so inflamed by the stench of your own bowels that you have nary a clue about what’s going on in the world.
The following is a link to what the deeply regretted Dr King – brother to ALL humans, including Jews – had to say about your wretched anti-Semitic bigotry: http://archive.frontpagemag.com/readArticle.aspx?ARTID=20210.
I realize that you’ll probably fail to use the link, because your racist hatred exceeds any pretense you may have to reason.

I think we can tell by your user-name that you have an anti-Semitic POV and are spreading “Palestinian” urban myths. Never mind the fact that Arafat himself said there was no such thing as “Palestinians” – they’re Arab, just like any other Arab, and that this myth of “Palestinians” was just created for political purposes. And he said that on the record as did many other “Palestinian” leaders.

        • jack

“and that this myth of “Palestinians” was just created for political purposes.”

Exceptional racism there and a lot of lies. And to call the palestinians a myth is like saying jews don’t exist.

Palestine was there before the influx of jewish refugees.
It was there before the Stern Gang Terrorists blew up more people in one day than have ever been killed in one day since.

There were Arabs (christian, Muslim and jewsish) that lived there before Isreal was created.

Isreal is no more legitimate than Palestine.
And the sooner you accept that the better.
The Agreement that allowed the terrorists that had bombed their way to the table (UN recognition of Isreal) stated that there would be no expulsion or persecution of the people that were indigenous to the area and that Palestine and Isreal would exist along side each other.
But that they both had to exist.

      • Arthur Cohn

Yes! MArtin Luther King DID say this. He did so at a talk he gave in Cambridge MA and was heard by everyone there including me and Seymour Martin Lipset who wrote about it.

      • dawvick

Your ignorance is reflected in all you write, as well as in your pugnacious false name. Check on your facts before you impugn the exceedingly well known quotes of an exceedingly well-documented historical figure.

    • Abram

You are correct about your statement, Richard. Here is a link, worthwhile reading MLK Jr.

  • Paula

The movie “Ted” also had allot of antisemitic non relevant
remarks. In addition from being filthy, low class and in bad taste.
