Meyer Habib, a French businessman and the vice president of the CRIF umbrella group of French Jewish communities, has been elected to France’s parliament.
French media reported that Habib, 52, was elected to the National Assembly in Sunday’s second round of voting.
His 8th District represents French people living abroad in Turkey, Israel, Italy, Greece, the Vatican, San Marino and Malta.
Running on an independent ticket, Habib defeated Valerie Hoffenberg, who was backed by France’s principal center-right opposition UMP party.
Ron Agam, an Israeli-French artist living in New York who is active in French politics, told The Algemeiner that Habib, who splits his time between France and Israel, could provide a unique voice in France’s Parliament.
“I think he will be a really strong voice in French parliament which will be uninhibited to say out loud things we maybe haven’t heard before [about Israel in France].”
The French embassy in Tel Aviv said in a statement Sunday that in Israel, Habib won 1,346 votes of the 2,176 cast, the Jewish Telegraphic Agency reported.
According to JTA, Israel is home to 65,738 Frenchmen eligible to vote out of 111,736 in the 8th District.
