A former British Shadow Minister who was caught on camera describing an IDF soldier as a “bloody Jew” has apologized for his remarks, the UK’s Jewish News reports.

British Member of Parliament Patrick Mercer told the website: “I’d like to apologize unreservedly for any offense I’ve caused to all my friends in the Jewish community.”

He added that he felt “extremely sorry” on watching the video of his remarks.

While being filmed as part of a Daily Telegraph and BBC Panorama sting operation, Mercer recounted a meeting with a female IDF soldier while on a visit to Israel. When the young woman told him she was a soldier, he thought: “You don’t look like a soldier to me. You look like a bloody Jew.”

Mercer told the Jewish News he will be writing to Chief Rabbi Lord sacks to express his remorse. He also said that he had a “terrific connection with the [Jewish]community” over the years and had been contacted by “Jewish friends who have been extremely supportive” since the story broke.
