Israel-based Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. is set to launch a generic form of the impotence-alleviating pill Viagra in Europe, Globes reported Friday.
The patent held by Pfizer Inc., which is located in the United States, expires in the UK and other countries this weekend, allowing Teva to launch the generic version. Teva will call their version Sildenafil. The cost of the pill will be reduced considerably, from £10 to £1 in the UK for instance.
However, Teva will be unable to provide Sildenafil to the U.S. market after a court ruled that the patent there is valid until 2020.
