‘Jew York’ Art Exhibition Spotlights Jewish Artists
by Deby Medrez Pier
Encapsulating New York Jewry in one art gallery seems like a very challenging task. That is why The Zach Feuer Gallery in Chelsea and Untitled Gallery in the Lower East Side united to curate the “Jew York” art exhibition, which displays a wide array of mixed media art by 78 Jewish artists— from Marc Chagall to Diane Arbus.
The curators of the show, Zach Feuer, Carol Cohen and Joel Mesler all agreed that there was no better topic to exhibit.
“We live in a time of survey exhaustion. There’s no ethnic group that hasn’t been neatly encapsulated… There’s nobody left to survey, and nowhere left to do it… So we figured our only option was to do a show of Jews, and do it in New York,” the curators said in a statement.
The curators believe that Jewry in New York can be best described by its heterogeneous quality. “I just wanted to put everyone in the room together and see what happens,” Feuer explained to the New York Times, “and not make some grand academic statement about Judaism.” They did not desire to pin down core aspects of Jewish art, but exhibit its versatility.
The show, it must be said, is definitely worth the “Schlep!”
