Israel indicted Friday who it says is one of the most dangerous terrorists to operate in the Gaza strip in recent memory, Israel’s Channel 2 reported.

Wael Abu Rida, accused of being a member of terror organization Islamic Jihad, was charged in a court in the southern Israeli town of Beersheba with scores of offenses, including attempted murder, belonging to a terrorist group and liaising with hostile foreign agents.

According to Channel 2, court documents also revealed Abu Rida is charged with attempted murder of dozens of IDF soldiers, training Palestinians to carry out suicide attacks, and obtaining anti-aircraft missiles he planned to use to shoot down IDF aircraft.

The circumstances surrounding Abu Rida’s capture remain unclear, but after visiting Egypt late last month he disappeared only to turn up in Israeli custody days later.

Israel says it has had Wael Abu Rida, a former policeman from the Gaza Strip, in custody since June 21.

Abu Rida’s lawyer, Mohammed Jabarin, indicated that his client would fight the charges.

Abu Rida’s confession to Israeli interrogators, which provided the basis for the indictment, was a “false version of events,” Jabarin told Reuters in Beersheba without elaborating.
