Former Nazi SS captain Erich Priebke will be buried in a secret location in Italy or Germany, Priebke family lawyer Paolo Giachini said Sunday, according to the UK Telegraph.

The former SS officer died at the age of 100 in Rome recently, where he spent his latter days under house arrest for his role in a wartime massacre that left 335 Italian civilians dead. Argentina, where he had spent 50 years of his life, refused to take his body, while the Vatican declined him funeral rights.

“The Jewish community has said it wanted him to have the fate of Bin Laden, with his ashes scattered at sea, to avoid creating a place of pilgrimage,” Giachini said, according to the Telegraph.

“However, whoever wants will be able to pay homage to a figure who has become a symbol of dignity, freedom and human suffering. We have not allowed the authorities or the Jewish community to walk all over us,” Giachini said.

Reports last week said Priebke’s body had gone missing, but Giachini said the casket is in the Rome airport, awaiting confirmation of the burial location.
