IDF Recalls Seton Hall Basketball Sophomore Tommy Maayan to Complete Military Service
by Joshua Levitt
The Israel Defense Forces has recalled Seton Hall sophomore and rising basketball star Tommy Maayan, from Israel’s Galilee, to complete his military service, the New York Daily News reported on Wednesday.
The player has yet to comment on the report, but the news is being seen as a disappointment to Seton Hall fans as the basketball season starts after Maayan became its break out star last year.
Last season, because of injuries plaguing the Seton Hall team, Maayan, a 6′ 2″ freshman point guard, was promoted to the varsity squad, generating 101 assists in 33 games, 17 of which he started. After the Big East Tournament, Maayan returned to Israel to begin his three-year military service.
The Daily News said that after serving six-months, Maayan received a waiver that was understood to allow him to play in the U.S. for the year. The New York Times reported that he was told this week that he must return to Israel in the new year, cutting short his play.
