British Member of Parliament Douglas Carswell on Wednesday innocently asked the Twitter-verse to confirm a confounding fact of international relations in the Middle East:

“Is it really true that Saudi Arabia refuses to recognise Israel? Seriously? I find that very surprising. Anyone confirm?”

Dozens of Twitter users did respond that, yes, indeed, Saudi Arabia refuses to recognize Israel, but the parliamentarian, who shows himself fly fishing on the wallpaper of his Twitter page, on Wednesday morning had yet to offer any elaboration on the question or the responses it garnered.

Saudi Arabia’s refusal to recognize Israel was news in the U.S. last year when current New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, in his former position as the city’s Public Advocate, asked the Port Authorities of New York and Washington, D.C., to revoke its flag carrier’s runway rights after an Israeli told de Blasio that he was unable to get a seat on a Saudi Arabia Airlines flight because of his Israel passport.

According to his website, Carswell is a Conservative MP from Clacton-on-Sea and was voted ‘Parliamentarian of the Year,’ by the Spectator in 2009.
