Marionville, Missouri, Mayor Dan Clevenger, who took office less than a week ago, is facing calls for his impeachment after speaking favorably about Frazier Glenn Miller, the white supremacist suspected of killing three people at two Jewish facilities in Kansas on Sunday.

Marionville resident Debbie Sallee told television station KOLR that she and others intend to ask the City Council or Board of Alderman for Clevenger’s resignation. If Clevenger does not resign, Sallee said they will call for impeachment.

“No matter what his personal beliefs are, he portrayed those on his interview as the Mayor of Marionville,” Sallee said. “And we are getting feedback from the community and the nation that if we elect a man like that to be our mayor of our city, that we must be like that, too, and that is very important people know that is not our city.”

While some residents of Marionville, a community of 2,220 people, picketed outside City Hall on Wednesday, Clevenger told KOLR he has “no doubt” he could fairly represent a Jewish resident. He also insisted that he is not a white supremacist.

In the days following Miller’s rampage outside a Jewish community center and retirement complex in Overland Park, Kan., Clevenger has spoken fondly of the alleged shooter. The mayor told the television station KSPR he denounces the violence and no longer considers Miller a friend, but also said he “kind of agreed” with Miller “on some things.”

Clevenger added that Miller was “very fair and honest and never had a bit of problems out of him. He was always nice and friendly and respectful of elder people. He respected his elders greatly, as long as they were the same color as him.”

A month ago, a Marionville resident drew attention to a ‘Letter to the Editor’ Clevenger sent to a local newspaper nearly a decade ago in which he described himself as “a friend of Frazier Miller helping to spread his warnings.” Clevenger also decried the “Jew-run medical industry” and the “Jew-run government backed banking industry,” KOLR said.

Clevenger later tried to defend himself in a letter sent to the Aurora Missouri Advertiser days before Marionville’s April 8 election. He denied being a racist, saying that he “only pointed out the corporations responsible for destroying the United States are run by Jews.”

“The only group I dislike are liars and thieves,” he wrote in the letter, according to KOLR. “Last time I checked, liars and thieves are not a race, but, every race has a large share of liars and thieves.”
