A venerated rabbi in Casablanca, Morocco, sustained serious injuries, including broken bones, in a beating by an Arab assailant on Friday night, according to a local report.
The suspect, who was in his 20s, and who local officials said was known to the police, attacked Rabbi Moshe Ohayon near a synagogue after evening services, breaking several of his ribs in the process.
“This is revenge for what the Jews are doing in Gaza,” the rabbi told police the assailant said during the ambush attack, in which he beat and kicked the rabbi in the chest and head.
Passersby did not heed his calls for help, the report said.
Community leaders were shocked by the boldness of the attack on Ohayon, who is a major figure in the ancient city, which has been home to Jews for centuries.
“Since the recent events in Judea, Samaria, and the Gaza Strip, there is a growth in harassment of Jews,” a Jewish resident of the city told Alyaexpress News. “It’s become really scary to live here.”
The attack joins similar reports worldwide, of Jews coming under physical or verbal assaults for supporting Israel in its ongoing Operation Protective Edge.
Last Thursday, in Melbourne, Australia, a former IDF soldier reported being beaten and cut with a knife by several Arabs who called him a “Jewish dog,” during the attack, according to Israel’s Ma’ariv daily.
In northeast Paris, unknown assailants hurled a firebomb at the entrance to a synagogue, according to Israel’s Haaretz daily. There was minor damage, but no injuries in the attack, according to the National Bureau for Vigilance Against Anti-Semitism, or BNVCA.
On the first day of the operation in Gaza on July 8, a man bearing a “Middle Eastern appearance” pepper-sprayed a Jewish 17-year-old girl on a Paris street, the group said.
“Dirty Jewess, inshallah you will die,” the man shouted at her, according to the BNVCA report.
On July 11, a pro-Palestinian woman attacked a pro-Israel activist at a rally in Boston, grabbing her camera and scuffling with her. Watch that incident below:
