Israel literally had no choice other than to launch its invasion of Gaza on Thursday night, Algemeiner Editor Dovid Efune said in an interview on CNBC’s Closing Bell less then an hour after the escalation was announced.

“Over the last ten days you had a situation where 6 million, that’s a full three quarters of Israel’s citizens, are under rocket fire,” he said. “They tried (to reach a ceasefire agreement) with the Egyptian truce which was summarily dismissed by Hamas. Literally, you had a situation here where the IDF, where the Israeli government, had no choice.”

Israel launched its ongoing Operation Protective Edge 10 days ago aimed at stemming rocket fire from Hamas-controlled Gaza. After several attempts at de-escalation, Israel launched its Gaza ground offensive with Israel’s Prime Minister Netanayhu saying, “Operation Protective Edge will continue until it reaches its goal – restoring quiet to Israel’s citizens for a prolonged period, while inflicting a significant blow to the infrastructures of Hamas and the other terrorist organizations.”

“This was coming for a long time,” Efune said on CNBC, “and everything was done to avoid it. Now the IDF has gone in full force, with overwhelming force, with very detailed military strategy, striking multiple targets, including cyber targets, simultaneously, and I think as your other guest mentioned we are going to see a very decisive victory for Israel at the end of this.”
