The Israel Defense Forces on Tuesday released aerial photos showing how rockets from Gaza targeting Israel actually hit Shati refugee camp, run by the UNRWA, and Al Shifa Hospital, which has become a de-facto Hamas headquarters, against international rules of war.

The IDF published the diagram on Twitter, with a caption indicating that it reflected fire on Monday at 4:58PM local time. The diagram included the trajectories of the four rockets: one went out to sea, one reached Israel and two misfired, hitting Shati and Al Shifa, in the foreground.

In the Tweet, the IDF said: “Gaza terrorists fired rockets today, hoping to kill Israelis. Instead, they hit a hospital & a refugee camp in Gaza”.

The official statement contradicted what NBC News had reported on Monday, when correspondent Ayman Mohyeldin said on Twitter that it was an Israeli drone that struck Al Shifa Hospital.

The reporter later retracted that Tweet to make it more ambiguous, removing the words “Israeli fire.”

But the original report was still referred to online by NBC affiliates, including its office in Washington, which said on Twitter: “UPDATE: IDF says air strike that hit near Gaza hospital not Israeli; NBC News journalist witnessing the bombing said it was Israeli drone.”

The Daily Dot reported: “The original lead in the NBC article read: ‘Israeli strikes hit within yards of Gaza’s main hospital as well as at a refugee camp on Monday, leaving at least 30 dead and wounded.’ The later version of the report did not indicate who fired the missiles or rockets.”

After the report aired, the IDF issued a statement, denying there was any Israeli activity in the area. The IDF said, “A short while ago Al-Shifa hospital was struck by a failed rocket attack launched by Gaza terror organizations. A barrage of three rockets that were aimed towards Israel, struck the hospital. At the time of the incident there was no Israeli military activity in the area surrounding the hospital whatsoever.”

The Daily Dot also noted: “The eyewitness report by an NBC News journalist—presumably Mohyeldin—was changed to say: ‘Early reports from the ground had said an Israeli drone appeared responsible for the attack.'”
