Israel’s Minister of Finance, Yair Lapid, (Yesh Atid) on Wednesday called for the head of Hamas’ military arm, Muhammed Deif, to be killed.

“Hamas is losing the war,” said Lapid, according to Israeli news website NRG. “We heard Muhammed Deif’s speech that tried to conceal the fact that he knows that he’s a dead man. It’s reminiscent of Sadaam Hussein who said he’s beating the Americans and after the operation we didn’t see or hear from him again. We will get to him and we will take him out. Our soldiers’ achievements thus far are simply astonishing.”

According to Israeli daily Israel Hayom, the call to eliminate Deif follows another demand made by the Lapid at Tuesday night’s security cabinet meeting for the targeted killing of Hamas leaders Ismail Haniyeh and Khaled Mashaal. Minister of Economy Naftali Bennett (Bayit Yehudi) apparently supported Lapid’s idea, as did Avigdor Liberman. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was against it. The Prime Minister’s Office is denying that such a debate ever took place.

According to Gaza’s Interior Ministry, Israeli aircraft fired a missile at Haniyeh’s house on Tuesday morning, causing damage but no casualties. The report was confirmed on Facebook by Haniyeh’s son. The IDF spokesperson has yet to confirm the report.
