Philadelphia Kosher Butchery Spray Painted With Swastikas
by Shiryn Ghermezian
Owners of a Philadelphia kosher butchery arrived at their shop on Thursday morning to find it tagged with several large red swastikas, NBC News reported.
The anti-Semitic graffiti was scrawled across the storefront, back door and walls of Simon’s Glatt Kosher Meats Products in the city’s Oxford Circle. The vandals did not do any other damage to the property, according to police.
The shop has been owned by Simon and Ella Rachsmtut for 24 years. Their family fled Ukraine ahead of the Nazis in 1941, according to ABC News.
“This is very bothering,” Simon said. “As a Jewish person I feel very bad. I say this is a shame, it’s no good. Not in America.”
With the help of family members, the store owners quickly cleaned up the graffiti before customers began arriving at the store.
Police say they are are investigating the crime but have not yet disclosed any information on possible suspects. So far no arrests have been made, according to CBS Philly. Detectives arrived at the scene Thursday morning to gather evidence, including surveillance video from nearby shops.
ABC reported that the vandalism appears to be a one-time incident rather than part of a series of hate crimes, and that some speculate the crime was committed by a prankster, especially considering the swastikas were painted backwards.
