“Iran must not be allowed to continue to pursue its nuclear program which is threatening the small measure of stability that still remains in the Middle East,” Israel’s Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman told international counterparts on Sunday, according to the ministry.
Meeting on the sidelines of the annual United Nations General Assembly session, Lieberman met with the foreign ministers of Canada, the Czech Republic, Greece, Austria and Rwanda, the ministry said.
Speaking to Israel’s Channel 2 News earlier this month, Lieberman cautioned that Israel, “will have to deal with it on our own,” referring to Tehran’s nuclear weapons program.
“We rely only on ourselves,” Lieberman said at the time, adding that, “At end of the day, from 1948 onward, no outsiders protected Israel. We dealt with all threats alone. We have no expectations or demands from the world.”
In New York, Lieberman said he was “pessimistic as to the chances of achieving a reasonable agreement.”
“The bad agreement with Tehran may result in a bad agreement similar to that made with North Korea regarding its nuclear weapons,” Lieberman warned.
Pointing out that, after Iran, “the greatest threat today to world stability is the persistent efforts by terror organizations to seize possession of weapons of mass destruction by taking over states,” Lieberman urged “the free world to form a unified front to confront” ISIS, Al-Qaeda and similar jihadi groups marauding through the mideast.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed the world body Monday evening, Israel time, and highlighted vitriolic remarks made by Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas against Israel in his address on Friday.
Lieberman said the content and tone of Abbas’ speech rendered him “irrelevant to any attempt to achieve an agreement between Israel and the Palestinians.”
