Muhammad Zoabi, the Israeli-Arab teenager who was forced to go into hiding over the summer after he publicly expressed support for Zionism and the State of Israel, has finally resurfaced with a defiant post on his Facebook page.

“My dear friends, the last half year was not an easy period of my life. I had to hide, go under ground, keep a low profile like what if i have done a nasty crime,” Zoabi wrote, in hesitant English. “I simply went and still going through things that teenagers rarely go through.”

The 17 year-old, who describes himself as a “proud Israeli Arab Muslim Zionist,” said that his plight was partly the result of his stance against anti-Semitism and “Islamic and Arab extremism.”

Most importantly, Zoabi said, was his effort to “show the world the real face of regular Arabs and Muslims who’re simply sick of their leaders’ corruption and unlimited hate.”

Zoabi was forced to go underground for his outspoken support of the three Israeli teenagers, Naftali Fraenkel, Gilad Shaer and Eyal Yifrah, who were abducted and murdered last June by a Hamas terror cell in the West Bank. “Bring them back and you better bring them back now!” he demanded, in a widely shared YouTube posting.

The teenager, who hails from the northern city of Nazareth, initially found shelter at the home of Kay Wilson, an Israeli victim of terror, before fleeing to the United States.

Zoabi is a cousin of Haneen Zoabi, an Arab member of the Knesset who frequently engages in incitement against Israel. An article by David Gerstman on the popular Legal Insurrection blog quoted Professor William Jacobson of the Cornell University Law School saying that “Haneen Zoabi could probably count on ‘an endowed professorship at Columbia, or presidency of the American Studies Association.'”

Added Gerstman: “But her cousin Mohammad’s plight is mostly ignored.”

  • I admire Muhammad Zoabi for speaking his mind, and I likewise admire Haneen for speaking her mind about the 50 racist laws against Palestinians. I’m not sure, however, about Muhammad’s level of awareness, nor the special kinds of pressures he must be facing. It will be interesting to see what he believes in ten or fifteen years.

Let us hope that there will someday be room for all unusual opinions, in the extremely violent theocracy that Israel/Palestine is becoming.

  • This young man could highlight and inform the world media of the restrictions, sensorship and intimidation on the entire extended family by the Palesinian Authorities, even on Israely citizens for speaking the truth, retarding Israel

In the world of extremist the man capable of independent thought is doomed to isolation.

  • Mortimer Levy

    I wouldn’t sell him life insurance. M.L.

  • Shalom Freedman

This young man displays a kind of courage one can only admire. He speaks for the truth that he has seen and known, and has not let himself be intimidated.
There are now a whole list of Muslim heroes like him who have dared to speak out against inhumane cruelty from Aayan Hirst Ali to the Green Prince.
I hope that this young man will be able to make a good life for himself.

    • Shalom is correct but I wish their were Jews especially orthodox Jews who would aggressively support Palestinian rights Including those who want their own state in return for land. I do not know many at all. I know many orthodox Jews who have committed themselves to preventing any return of land no matter what even if it means some of them will die and there will be mutual hate for ever. Apartheid stat is their actual theme even if they use other words. This is from a one time a really committed religious Zionist. I just can not support growing facism.Kel n’komot hashem. We need to leave it to him not the facist rabbanim.

that would be true but for the fact that the “palestinians” are suffering far more apartheid at the hands of their arab cousins – but no noises are made about that because Jordan (west bank) and Egypt (gaza) can easily absorb them thus revoking their spurious claim on the land they’re living on AND ending their refugee status.

sadly the likelihood of that happening is very very low.

  • Helena

A very courageous young man. In his Arab-Muslim environment he would be seen as a traitor ofcourse.
    May God protect him.

  • Liz

Am Mohammed Zoabi Chai!!! We need more like him, on both sides!

  • Mireille Mechoullam

I think Israel should provide that young Muslim Zionist with 24/7 protection. I am afraid Mohamed will be hurt by his own family for being a “traitor” to the “Palestinian” cause. In fact all the members of his family should also be protected.

    • steve

only the members of his family that warrant the protection. if they’re haters like the rest of the Arab world at large then no such privilege.

    • Ytzhaq

Mohamed es hijo de una senadora del keneset, así que algo de seguridad debe tener, toda su familia es árabe, musulmana y sionista

  • rachel robinson

good for him! he is one of the few who, at this very young age, recognizes the good people of Israel. Maybe M. Abbas should see this, and also talk to this kid, he may learn a thing or two.

  • steven L

Now I know at least two remarkable Muslim Israelis. This kid and a lady, Anat Haskia, who plans to get on the Jewish home partiy. Probably there are many thousands of them.

  • dante

Muhammad has chosen a virtuous but difficult path. One hopes that the Almighty will watch over him, protect him, help him grow and enjoy the blessings of family, achievement and contentment. Muhammad should know that he has many friends and admirers; he’s an exceptional person.

  • Marty

I hope the Israeli security apparatus is keeping an eye on Muhammad.

  • Laura Burkhart

Hey, Zoabi, You are a courageous man, living in a hateful world.
Going along with the masses, for any reason, especially unloving one’s will leave you empty..
though you may have acceptance from your people. Your generation is made for the task at hand! You are going the right way!!!

  • andy

Good luck to you Muhammad Zoabi. You are a brave lad. I hope you do well in America. However, you will miss Israel so change your name and come back after things cool down.
