In a 15-minute barn burning speech yesterday on the floor of the US Senate, Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) issued a detailed list of offenses committed by the Obama Administration against the state of Israel. He also said that the conditions are not right for peace negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians.
The Florida Republican is presently mulling a run for the White House in 2016.
Rubio delivered a a long list of what he considered offenses committed by President Obama and his Administration against the state of Israel. These included anti-Israel rhetoric in speeches, a congratulatory telephone call to PA President Mahmoud Abbas, leaks to the press about Israel, and the demand for a return to pre-1967 lines.
The Senator specifically criticized another White House hopeful, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Rubio highlighted the fact that Clinton fielded a question about “Zionist lobbyists,” and later called attention to what he called her “now-infamous 45-minute phone call” where she berated Prime Minister Netanyahu.
The Senator also summarized a list of offenses by the Palestinian Authority, including its persistent antisemitic rhetoric.
At one point, Rubio rejected Israeli-Palestinian peace negotiations, saying that the conditions do not exist for a peace deal with people “who teach their children that killing Jews is a glorious thing.”
And these are the people that this President wants to put pressure on them to cut a peace deal with. I think Netanyahu is right. The conditions do not exist for a peace deal with people who teach their children that killing Jews is a glorious thing. The conditions for peace do not exist with a people, with a government, I should say, not a people. The people are victims of this government, of the Palestinian Authority, and not to mention Hamas, who teach people that killing Jews is a glorious thing, that there is no such thing as a Jewish people, that any methods of destroying them is valid, that pay them salaries and benefits.
Rubio also accused Obama of inadvertently encouraging terrorism in Israel:
This President is making a historic mistake. Allies have differences, but allies like Israel, when you have a difference with them and it is public, it emboldens their enemies to launch more rockets out of southern Lebanon and Gaza, to launch more terrorist attacks, to go to international forums and delegitimize Israel’s right to exist. And this is what they’re doing.
Rubio’s comments come after weeks of mounting anger by the White House towards Netanyahu and particularly harsh rhetoric following Netanyahu’s strong reelection victory on Tuesday.
