A video published on Wednesday shows a senior official at New York State’s Cornell University advising an undercover investigative journalist on how to start and fund a pro-ISIS and Hamas club on campus.
The footage was produced by James O’Keefe, an award-winning journalist and New York Times’ best-selling author, who has made a name for himself as a “citizen journalist.”
In O’Keefe’s video, Cornell University’s Assistant Dean for Students Joseph Scaffido was captured on hidden camera advising the journalist to start the club, and on how to obtain funding, and even send care packages to ISIS and Hamas. He even gave advice to the journalist on how to bring an ISIS member to Cornell, in order to run a “training camp” on campus, saying, “It’s just like bringing in a coach, to do a training on a sports team or something.”
When the journalist put forward that the proposed club would like to support Hamas as well, Scaffidio responded that Cornell would not differentiate between the groups “and say you are not allowed to support the group.” Scaffidio noted that though Cornell doesn’t “believe in them or something like that…I think the University wants the entire community to understand what’s going on in all parts of the world.”
O’Keefe said he was “chilled and saddened” by Scaffido’s position on the pro-ISIS club. “At the very best Scaffido’s attitude towards the proposed club is complacent and irresponsible, at the very worst he genuinely and willingly supports those sympathetic to ISIS freedom fighters, or more aptly stated: terrorists. In either case, Scaffido’s comments have placed Cornell in the hot seat. I think it is fair to say that at the very least Cornell owes the American people an explanation, if not an apology.”
