Business tycoon Donald Trump stirred controversy among anti-Israel Twitter users on Monday after tweeting that he is the only person who can “save” the Jewish state.

“Nobody but Donald Trump will save Israel. You are wasting your time with these politicians and political clowns. Best!” he wrote. Trump added a hashtag naming Jewish philanthropist Sheldon Adelson, who owns The Venetian in Las Vegas and hosted the Republican Jewish Coalition spring meeting this weekend at his hotel.

Adelson is the most sought-after donor in the race for the Republican presidential nomination, according to The New York Times. He gave at least $100 million to support Republican presidential candidates in 2012 and helped Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu win re-election in March, according to the report.

Trump’s Twitter post sparked a backlash from some anti-Israel Twitter followers. One social media user wrote, “You mean that nation that engages in International crimes on a daily basis/genocide/murder/crimes against humanity? Sweet.” Another insisted that “Nations need to be saved From Israel!!” and not the other way around.

Yet another Twitter user asked the business tycoon “what happened to impartiality,” while one claimed that a “nuclear armed Israel” does not need saving and requested that Trump stop with the “fear mongering.”

Some of Trump’s Twitter followers suggested he take on a political role to help Israel. One encouraged him to become an Israeli politician and another said “you can’t help Israel without being elected. If you really care about Israel, run or stop trashing our actual candidates.”

Trump has long toyed with the idea of launching a presidential bid as a Republican candidate.
