Tens of millions of Turks are voting today in a crucial parliamentary election that is set to decide whether or not the ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party) will have enough majority to rewrite the Constitution and give President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan greater executive powers.

The AK Party is expected emerge as the largest party again but it must win a majority big enough to successfully press for the highly contentious constitutional changes. This would depend to a large extent on whether or not the pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) will be able to win enough votes to pass a 10-percent election threshold. If it does, the AK Party will most likely be deprived of the super majority it hopes to win.
