A Jewish jeweler in Manchester, England has turned into a bona fide sleuth after helping police catch a member of an organized crime ring.
The jeweler, who wishes to remain anonymous, was attacked by two men in October 2011. He was injured and £80,000 (roughly $128,000) worth of diamonds and pearls was stolen.
The jeweler helped direct police to CCTV footage, identifying one culprit who was carrying out reconnaissance of the trader on the day of the robbery. This led them to Charles Rodriguez, a 31-year-old Colombian-born member of the London-based South American crime group the Latin Kings. After fleeing the UK Rodriguez was nabbed and on Monday sentenced to more than five years in prison.
But this wasn’t the first time the jeweler did his best Magnum PI impression. In 2011, he helped police track down another gang who stole £220,000 (roughly $352,000) worth of diamonds by placing tracking devices on the cars of Jewish diamond traders.
After becoming suspicious the jeweler took his car to a mechanic who uncovered the device. Two men were eventually jailed for a total of six years for their involvement.
