‘The Pater’ Tells a Story of Childlessness From the Rare Male Perspective (REVIEW)

JNS.org – Dozens if not hundreds of books have been written about the childlessness of Jewish women — and the stories are told from their perspective. But in his recently released volume, The Pater: My Father, My Judaism, My Childlessness, Elliot Jager explores a topic that to his knowledge has never been deeply examined before: childlessness from the vantage point of Jewish men. “Pater” is the Latin word for father. The author, a former editor at The Jerusalem Post, tackles his relationship with his […]

An Israeli musician is asking social media users to help him find the person who gave him a guitar 15 years ago and changed his life forever. Arnold Nesis, from Jerusalem, posted a video on his Facebook page on Sunday asking people to help him find his “angel of music.” Sometime between 1999-2000, Nesis, who was 15 at the time, had a dream of becoming a guitar player. He said his parents did not support the idea and refused to buy him an […]

Looking to the Past for Lessons on How to Live Today (REVIEW)

Rabbi Jonathan Sacks’ latest book, Not In God’s Name, deals with the literal and figurative meaning of the commandment, “Do not take the Lord’s name on vain.” Using easy to read prose, he takes us on a journey back to the creation of man, starting with Adam and Eve, and leads us through the millennia until we arrive at the stage of humankind as it exists today. He highlights the fact that at the dawn of our history, the “blame game” — […]

Israel’s Solution for World’s Water Shortage Could Lead to Grassroots Movement (INTERVIEW)

JNS.org – Speaking with me in Austin, Texas, in between his 55th and 56th speaking engagements for “Let There Be Water: Israel’s Solution for a Water-Starved World,” author Seth M. Siegel laments how the Barnes & Noble retailer places his book in the wildlife section. There isn’t a single animal mentioned anywhere in the volume’s 352 pages. “They have me in the wildlife section because they don’t have a context,” Siegel says. “I would love to see a day, and I think it’ll happen soon, that […]

Stolen Goats Reveal True Spirit, Camaraderie of Israel

JNS.org – The morning of Dec. 4 was crisp and chilly, with just the right amount of sunlight to stave off the cold. I found myself standing in a circle of poker-faced men and women listening to an intelligence and organizational brief of a volunteer search-and-rescue operation to recover stolen goats. Many laughed when I told them I was going to the Negev desert to help search for stolen livestock. The organization in charge of this operation, HaShomer HaChadash (“The New […]
