The executive vice chairman of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, Malcolm Hoenlein has been one of American Jewry's most high-profile representatives for over three decades, meeting with monarchs, presidents and prime ministers across the globe. A regular interview subject in The Algemeiner, Hoenlein spoke extensively to the paper in May 2018 about his hopes and fears for Israel in a turbulent Middle East. “What I see happening today is similar to what happened in the 1920s with Sykes-Picot, except it’s with Iran and Turkey, with Russia,” Hoenlein observed. "We’re seeing a redrawing of the map of the Middle East and people do not pay enough attention to the overall, hegemonic, designs that these countries have." Hoenlein, whose time in office has coincided with six US presidents, is hopeful that the Trump administration "will try to reshape the Middle East in a way that brings stability, democracy and freedom."
