The sixth son of the late Sephardic chief rabbi of Israel, Ovadia Yosef, Yitzhak Yosef has served in the post once occupied by his father since 2013. Rabbi Yosef, who began his Talmudic studies at the age of 12, is the author of a set of books on Jewish law called "Yalkut Yosef," for which he was awarded the Rabbi Toledano Prize from the Tel Aviv Religious Council, as well as the Rav Kook Prize. Known for his outspoken public comments, in April 2018 Yosef called for international military intervention against the Assad regime in Syria. “I have said in the past and I will say it again, what’s happening in Syria is genocide of women and children in its cruelest form, using weapons of mass destruction,” Rabbi Yosef declared.
