A number of the protesters carried Egyptian and Palestinian flags, and expressed solidarity with the anti-government protests raging across Egypt.

This is only the most recent in a series of conflicts over development in the Ajami neignborhood that has pitted not only Jews and Arabs against each other, but older residents of the community and newer ones intent on gentrifying the area. Unless the authorities want to see more such conflicts in the future, they have to really work to see that new housing as well as rehabilited current housing benefits all of the residents of the area, Orthodox individuals and familes and non-Orthodox individuals and familes, Jews and Arabs. With strong leadership, sincere efforts at good will, and the efforts of planners from all sectors of the community, it … might just happen.
