The wail of sirens sounded across Israel on Thursday, signaling the country to come to a standstill in tribute to 6 million Jews who perished in the Holocaust.

For two minutes, pedestrians stopped in their tracks and motorists stood next to their vehicles, heads bowed. In homes and businesses, people suspended their daily tasks to pay homage to victims of the Nazi genocide.

Following Wednesday’s tragic accident in which an Israel Defense Forces soldier was killed after a lighting rig collapsed during an Independence Day rehearsal ceremony in Jerusalem, two unfortunate incidents took place on Thursday as well.

In Beersheba, a 60-year-old woman who stopped her car during the siren was hit by a moving vehicle. She sustained extensive injuries. Another woman, in her 40s, sustained injuries under similar circumstances in central Israel.
