A Syrian rebel military leader said Wednesday that it would be logical for Israel to know whether or not the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has used chemical weapons because they have “many, many” security personnel inside Syria.

“Israel has this information because there are many, many members of security services who are now very active in Syria,” Free Syrian Army Chief of Staff General Salim Idriss told CNN’s Christiane Amanpour. “Mossad is one of the most famous security services in the world and I don’t think they are away.”

Speaking at the Institute for National Security Studies in Tel Aviv on Tuesday, the head of the Israel Defense Forces Military Intelligence Research Branch, Brig. Gen. ltay Baron, said Assad has used lethal chemical weapons, mostly sarin gas, against armed rebels several times in the past few weeks, and is continuing to do so.

Baron said that photographs showing victims in Syria with foam coming out of their mouths and contracted pupils were signs that deadly gas had been used.

Kurds Flee Homes in Northern Iraq as Iraqi Forces Take Control

Thousands of Kurdish civilians fled their homes in northern Iraq on Wednesday, fearing harassment by government forces and Shiite militias who...

“We took some samples of the soil and of blood. The injured people were observed by doctors and the samples were tested and it was very clear that the regime used chemical weapons,”  Idriss told Amanpour.

Idriss said his doctors gave the samples to “observers” of the civil war in Syria, but refused to name which groups.

Both Britain and France now say soil samples indicate “some use of chemical weapons.”

  • According to me, everybody seems to be foaming at the mouth in Middle East at all times.

  • Many thanks for posting the article. I’ll be linking it on my website…

I’d be interested to know how Jewish or Israeli folks feel about Mossad operating in Syria and if the reports are true whether this is a good idea?

If Assad falls the Muslim Brotherhood will take over another country. One has to wonder what possible interest Israel has in destabilizing Syria? This is surely not good for Israel or the remaining Christians especially if a gang of radical Islamics take over like they did in Egypt.

I hope Israeli’s will use this opportunity to ask their leaders what their security services are up to in Syria.

Why make the assumption that Israelis are there to destabilize Syria? A stable front is in Israel’s interest. I believe they are there to keep tabs on the situation, to find out if chemical attacks are planned against them, and to try and keep the radical elements from taking over Syria.

Gen. Idriss is, no doubt, correct. Anybody who knows anything at all about Mossad and its operational capabilities would have to be crazy not to expect that it has infiltrated agents and cultivated other intelligence assets in Syria, Jordan, Iran, Egypt, indeed probably every country in that part of the world. The agency is admired/feared by the world’s intelligence community and Israel’s survival has and will depend on it. Would that our own CIA was so competent and dependable.

  • They’re Syrians! They don’t care. They think they’re going to rule the world some day soon. Right…fat chance! They can’t even take care of their own people. Aren’t there any sensible politicians in Syria?…or have the all escaped already?
