Israel’s national soccer team handily defeated Honduras in a friendly match at New York’s Citi Field Sunday.

Hen Ezra was Israel’s rainmaker, scoring in the 52nd minute and assisting Shimon Abihazira’s goal in the 76th.

“Ezra beat two defenders and lifted a shot over goalkeeper Noel Valladares. Abihazira took Ezra’s pass and chipped Valladares,” the Associated Press reported.

The Israeli national soccer team’s appearance in New York was their first in more than 35 years according to Haaretz.

Yes, it is true that American Jews and Israelis danced in the aisles at every opportunity.

However, this article fails to mention the absolute vile behavior of the Honduran fans towards Israel’s supporters.

Those who brandished Israeli flags were met with chants of “Ole Hitler” and were rained down on with garbage and anti-semitic taunts. Security did little to quell the increasingly tense situation as it became more and more apparent that Israel would win. I wish I could say my family and I were the only ones to witness this behavior, but upon leaving the stadium, we met other Israeli supporters who proclaimed similar scenarios at their seats.

And this happened in NYC, the ultimate melting pot, where we often don’t know where one culture ends and the other begins.

Anybody who salutes the Honduran flag today should be absolutely ashamed and appalled by the behavior of their fellow countrymen. One Honduran sitting behind me had the gall to call security over and say I was racist and he wanted me kicked out solely because I celebrated an Israeli goal with my family, raising the blue and white flag we had brought with us and cheering “Israel! Israel!” Extremely inebriated, He was later arrested and escorted out for a different indiscretion. When the game was over, Honduran fans rushed the field, handling me (a woman) violently, and another literally shoving his Honduran flag into my mouth. Calls for security went unanswered, and the surrounding Honduran fans found this hilarious.

I can’t say this is one country I will want to visit anytime soon, or ever.
