Comments made by a UK politician are being met with heavy criticism after he called for the “life of Palestinians since 1948” to be given the same prominence as the Shoah in British schools, according to London’s Jewish News.

Colchester MP Sir Bob Russell was speaking during a debate on the national curriculum in the House of Commons on Monday, when he posed a question to Education Secretary Michael Gove about the status of world history lessons, saying: “On the assumption that the 20th century will include the Holocaust, will he give me an assurance that the life of Palestinians since 1948 will be given equal attention?”

“These remarks are a shocking piece of Holocaust denigration,” said Jewish Leadership Council chief executive Jeremy Newmark. “There is simply no comparison between the two situations. It is worrying that so soon after the David Ward affair another MP thinks it is acceptable to play fast and loose with the language of the Holocaust in this context.”

Karen Pollock, Chief Executive of the Holocaust Educational Trust, added: “To try to equate the events of the Holocaust – the systematized mass murder of 6 million Jews – with the conflict in the Middle East is simply inaccurate as well as inappropriate.”

In response to Russell’s remarks this week, Gove said: “These are delicate waters, into which I fear to tread too definitively. One thing I would say is that there has been near universal welcome and support for the centrality of the Holocaust and the unique evil inherent in the Holocaust being in the national curriculum. Once one gets on to the position of the State of Israel after 1948, it is probably better if I step back. I have strong views on the matter and I would not wish to impose them on the curriculum.”

Gavin Stollar, of Liberal Democrat Friends of Israel, dismissed Russell’s comments as those of a “fringe marginal voice in the community.”

For anyone who doesn’t know, Sir Bob has visited the region extensively and speaks from experience, not hearsay. Anyone who does that is horrified, which is the word Baroness Scotland used after her visit last year, and David Cameron called Gaza the world’s largest prison camp. I don’t hear him being called anti-semitic, which would be odd for the former co-Patron of the Jewish National Fund.

  • So some you think that the Brits are worse than the nazis, and that they are the cause of all the problems in the Middle East… Some of you are in serious need of a brain transplant.

  • Lusien Berkowicz

    Shalom !!! ?????
I invite you to visit Israel and find the concentration camps for the Palestinian people. I presume that your knowledge regarding the second wold war 2 is negligible and you have never heard that 6 millions Jews have been burns in the crematoriums. It seems to me that if you were England prime minister you would have never done what Great Britain and USA have done to save Europe from the Nazis.

The Brit PM said that israel is a democracy, BUT he does not aprove of what Israel is doing. Regarding that Jew hating Sir Bob Russel. That man is not only a Jew hater, but an ignorant idiot to make such comparisons and remarks.

Does he expect Israel not to defend itself aginst Islamic terrorism?
Had the Nazi Muslims/Arabs accepted the 1947 UN division or 2 states, and not sent 7 Arab armies to ‘destroy the reborn Jewish biblical state and send the Jews into the sea”, there would have been peace from day 1.
But let us not forget how the British stabbed Israel/Jews in the back, during the Mandate.

The League of Nations gave the entire land to the Jews. This has never been abrogated.

The British divided the land, and gave parts to Syria, created Jordan, and Lebanon.

The British acted worse than the nazis. They tried to help the Arabs to destroy Israel.
Let us not forget how the British army arrested Jews for blowing the Shofar at the Western Wall, because it “upset” the Muslims. But the Muslims were allowed to “call to prayer ” at all ungodly hours in the middle of the night, thereby giving the Jews very little sleep.
The British also supplied the Arabs with weapons, but hanged young Jews who were caught with a weapon.
No Mr Brit PM, you and your British are the cause of all the trouble.
The Jews/Israel want nothing more, than to live in peace with their Arab neighbours, but the Arabs want nothing less than the total destruction of Israel and the murder of thousands of Jews.Or to cause a second Holocaust by the murder of all Israeli Jews.

San Remo was in 1920, and concluded on 25 April of that year, I believe. But the British government cheated fro the very beginning, turning the Mandate territory into an imperial asset by running an oil pipeline from Iraq through Acre.

  • Bob Russel’s comments are beneath contempt because not only are they blatantly untrue but he wilfully contorts all facts and reality to suit his personal Jew baiting mind set.

Not a single ‘Palestinian’ died of starvation. As we speak, these ‘Palestinians’ have been and continue to ERADICATE the Arab Christians amongst them and this Jew hate monger ignores the issue.
In fact, the only Arabs who are safe in the Middle East are those 1,500,000 citizens of Israel.
Why is Russel not mentioning how dozens of Syrians with serious wounds are going to Israeli on the Golan to be treated in Israeli hospitals?
Russel is a racist disguising himself as defender of the ‘Palestinians’. What a coward!

Which of his “comments” was untrue? He was asking a question, not making a statement. You should apologise to this highly respected man for branding him a racist.

Sir? What a pedigree to bestow on such an ignoramus!

  • So the Liberal Democrats are at it again! Is this demented antisemite going to be honored with a baronetcy like fellow Lib Dem antisemite Jenny Tonge? This is a 21st century version of the Blood Libel.

  • The indigenous people are the Jews, not the Arabs that did not arrive until centuries later.

    • Stubizz

Oh? So who was there before the Jews? When did the Jews arrive? When did the Arabs arrive? When did the Jews leave? Why should Jews be allowed to return after 1700 years when Arabs ejected (by the returning Jews) are not allowed to return after only 65 years?

Seems like a lot of people here need to do their homework.

I wish we had at least one member of Congress to “tell it like it is,” with the courage of Sir Bob. Evidently, the British Parliament is not quite yet the Occupied Israeli Territory as what used to be the US Congress.

  • EthanP

One need have no further example of this man’s anti Semitism or his insanity. The Palestinian experience isn’t even in the top 20 of suffering since 1945. Zaire/Congo, Darfur, Somalia, Tibet, Afganistan and Rwanda leap to mind. What do these and any number of other similar situations have in common that the Palestinian one doesn’t. There are no Jews involved! And no Arab petrodollars!

  • Bernard Ross

the depravity of this politician enables the depravity of the muslim grooming gangs of britain to rape their british children in a national orgy. By lying about the Jews and israel in order to appease the Muslims such depraved leaders sell britains unprotected children into the most horrible of slavery. they are the enablers of depraved addictions. they apparently have no time for their own children. what they wish for the Jews is blowing back on them.

  • He should have learned his history lessons better. And go back to the treaty of San Remo from 1922. His British government is the cause of all of the problems in the Middle East. They Cheated from the beginning on the French and British Mandate territories. But it is easy to blame the Jews.
