Former Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was appointed by Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamanei to the country’s top political arbitration body on Monday, Iranian media outlets reported.

On his website, Khamenei praised Ahmadinejad’s “worthy efforts” as president, following the appointment.

“Considering the profuse experience you gained during eight years of worthy efforts, I appoint you as a member of the Expediency Council,” a statement said.

The council is dominated by conservatives and acts as an advisory body for Khamenei, who has final say on all of the country’s policies.

Ahmadinejad’s term ended Saturday after eight tumultuous and controversial years in office.
