Shep Gordon had an influential ally during his rise to the top of the music industry: Jimi Hendrix. Upon meeting the rock legend in the 1960s, Hendrix asked Gordon, “Are you Jewish?” Gordon replied in the affirmative and Hendrix offered, “You should be a manager.” The two then collaborated on a name for the new management company, settling on Alive,  The New York Post reports.

The story is retold in Mike Myers’ directorial debut, “Supermensch,” which explores Gordon’s life.

The two met after Gordon got into an altercation with rock icon Janis Joplin after arriving in Los Angeles in the 1960s. Joplin later apologized and introduced him to her pal Hendrix. The rest is history.

Gordon went on to manage Joplin, Hendrix, Pink Floyd, and Alice Cooper, among others, before retiring to Hawaii to concentrate on culinary arts and adopt four orphaned children.

While it might be said Gordon was handed vocational guidance by Jimi Hendrix: “Are you Jewish? You should be a manager,” Shep Gordon was NEVER the manager of Jimi Hendrix.

Gordon managed Pink Floyd? I hope the inflateable pig wasn’t his idea

    • Fortune

      I DOUBT IT.

  • It’s also robustly suggested that Shep Gordon was responsible for murdering Hendrix who like Lennon and Marley said a lot about peace and love during an profitable war and died prematurely.

      Charles,
Have you ever met Shep Gordon? He is a buddhist and would never hurt anyone. I have to say Shep is one of the nicest men I have ever met. Shep didn’t have any financial gain or loss with Jimi Hendrix. He was not his manager but simply knew him. He did manage Alice Cooper and Pink Floyd. He only managed Pink Floyd for a little over a week.

Too bad Pink Floyd was one of his clients. Did they make him wear a swastika when dealing with them?

That is a facinating bit of information on pop culture.
