The European Jewish Congress awarded Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras to honor his “courageous leadership” in cracking down on leaders of Greece’s anti-Semitic, pro-Fascist, neo-Nazi Golden Dawn party this September, the UK’s Jewish News reported on Wednesday.

The EJC held its annual executive meeting in Athens where it presented Samaras with the award.

In September, Samaras began a widespread crackdown to eliminate the Golden Dawn party and presented a bill in the Greek parliament targeting hate speech .

The Greek government had arrested the Golden Dawn party head and other parliament members in the wake of the recent murder of popular singer Pavlos Fyssas by a member of the party. Nikos Michaloliakos, 56, was arrested along with Golden Dawn lawmaker and spokesman Ilias Kassidiairis and two other party members on charges of belonging to a “criminal organisation.”

“They are a criminal group of people, who will be tried in a democratic manner,” Samaras said at an American Jewish Committee reception in his honor in September.
