The Israel Defense Forces said there was a “dramatic increase” in rocket attacks from Gaza against Israel in January, with at least 28 rockets being launched in one month.

In a statement, the IDF said 14 rockets landed in southern Israel and five were intercepted by the Iron Dome missile defense system, as they approached more developed Ashkelon.

January’s total of 28 rockets fired at Israel was more than the previous four months combined, according to IDF data.

In response, Israeli Air Force jets targeted terror sites across the Gaza Strip, as well as a terror squad during final preparations to launch rockets at southern Israel.

The IDF also described targeting two known Gaza terrorists, Ahmed Sa’ad, from the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, and Ahmed Za’anin, from the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, who were extensively involved in launching rockets into Israel as well as other attacks against IDF forces.

In January, three improvised explosive devices (IEDs) were concealed adjacent to the Gaza security fence and detonated against IDF soldiers. Despite the potential death toll from the devices, their detonation caused no injuries.
