U.S. to ‘Assess’ Aid to Palestinians if New Unity Government Formed
by JNS.org
JNS.org – The U.S. may reassess its current financial assistance to the Palestinian Authority (PA) in light of the unity pact signed Wednesday by PA President Mahmoud Abbas’s Fatah party and the terror group Hamas.
Reuters cited an anonymous official who said that any Palestinian government “must unambiguously and explicitly commit to nonviolence, recognition of the state of Israel, and acceptance of previous agreements and obligations between the parties.”
“If a new Palestinian government is formed, we will assess it based on its adherence to the stipulations above, its policies and actions, and will determine any implications for our assistance based on U.S. law,” the official said.
In their pact, Fatah and Hamas agreed to form a unity government within five weeks and to hold parliamentary elections within six weeks.
