Israeli singer-songwriter Michael Greilsammer paid tribute to the HBO series Game of Thrones theme song and Israel’s national anthem in a video released Wednesday on YouTube.
Titled Hatikva-Game of Thrones Mashup, the black and white clip shows Greilsammer and company performing a mash-up composition of the two songs. The video has already attracted the attention of media outlets and at the time of publication had close to 26,000 views.
Greilsammer thought of blending the two songs earlier this week as he prepared to embark on an upcoming tour, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
“Right after watching the last episode of Game of Thrones I got a call regarding my concerts in France for Israel’s independence day,” he said. “They asked for a promo video, at that moment I got the idea to do this.”
Greilsammer’s breakthrough success came in 2009 with his debut album Mitorer / Je me réveille (Waking Up), which was released by French music label Naïve.
Hatikvah, which means “The Hope,” was composed by Samuel Cohen in 1888 and became Israel’s national anthem when the state was established in May 1948. Its lyrics were adapted from Jewish writer Naphtali Herz Imber’s 1877 poem.
