As Israeli Civilians Crouch Under Rockets, New Yorkers Must Rise Up

The Jewish community of the United States has held countless rallies throughout its history. The number of attendees that ultimately made these protests relevant were unknown until the rallies finally took place. The march on Washington for Soviet Jewry was anticipated to attract 5 to 10,000 people. The reality was a quarter of a million in attendance, which led to another imperative reality- the release of the Jews from the anti-Semitic grasp of the Soviet Union. Such an outcome could not have been made possible without the uprising and determination of Jews living in America.

On the grassroots level, our community knows what is right and what is wrong, when to march and when not to. When three Israelis were abducted last month there was a 10,000 man rally in front of the Israeli consulate in New York City, and there is the same necessity to publicly stand in the streets of New York right now. We need to show our support for Israel with our voices as well as our actions, while showing our adversaries that we are organized and determined not to be silent.

We also must draw attention for our potential friends to information that rallies of this sort could provide, instead of letting the other side cram airwaves with their propaganda. The vast majority of media outlets have demonized Israel for its recent actions. These actions were to defend itself against an enemy that has been threatening the lives of Israeli civilians for years.

As Israel is being criticized by a swarm of nations, it is imperative that the Jewish people of New York and elsewhere express their appreciation and admiration for their country. From Ashkenazi to Sephardi, the Jewish people must once again gather in unison to end the war on Israel.

Holocaust Survivor, Canadian Hall of Fame Figure Skater Dies at 95

Israel’s adversary in the current conflict that has waged on for decades sees Judaism as its final causality. For Hamas will not be satisfied until Israel is obliterated, a message Hamas leaders have no shame to publicly exclaim. So all Jews must too publicly display their resistance to this hate.

Golda Meir once famously said: “The truth is that if Israel were to put down its arms there would be no more Israel. If the Arabs were to put down their arms there would be no more war.”

Her statement is familiar and unfortunately it still bears relevance today as the Israeli government agreed to a cease-fire, yet rockets continued to soar from Gaza. So while the Israeli Defense Forces use their arms to ensure the survival of Israel, the people of New York City must raise their clenched fists upwards and show their encouragement. It is the least we can do and is of high importance. In New York, civilians are awoken by their iPhone alarms while in Israel civilians stay awake anticipating red alerts. As far as we are from Israel itself, the Jewish community of New York has an obligation to stand with and for the only Jewish state.

On Sunday July 20th at 4:00 PM a rally in support of Israel will be held in Times Square. More details can be found here.
